August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS)

August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute IDIBAPSThe research activities of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) are divided into six different areas made up of over 60 top-level research teams. Scientific breakthroughs are never the result of chance; they are long-term commitments that involve not only researchers, but also society as a whole. IDIBAPS is a consortium that has taken on one such commitment in Catalonia: to encourage translational research, innovation and technological progress in the field of biomedicine through different programs focusing on diseases with a high rate of prevalence, morbidity and mortality.

In 2009, researchers at the IDIBAPS were responsible for the publication of a total of  840 original articles in international journals, with a global impact factor of 3,879.32, which corresponds to an average of 4.62 impact factor points per article – an impressive figure that clearly reflects the quality of the centre's research.

The IDIBAPS participates in the Biomedical Research Networking Centre (CIBER) program sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. The institute is the leading CIBER in research into liver and digestive diseases (CIBERehd), respiratory diseases (CIBERes) and diabetes and related metabolic disorders (CIBERdem). Furthermore, the institute participates in and leads projects belonging to the Thematic Networks for Cooperative Research (RETICs), also sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, and takes part in an ever increasing number of projects financed by the European Commission. In 2009, the European Commission granted the IDIBAPS 40% of the projects it applied for, far above the European average of approximately 17%. Very few institutions can claim this level of success.
