Bellvitge University Hospital

University Hospital of BellvitgeBellvitge University Hospital (HUB) opened its doors in 1972 and is located in the city of l'Hospitalet de Llobregat. The hospital belongs to the Catalan Health Institute (ICS), a public company with legal personality and self-management capacities that provides comprehensive services to primary care centres and hospitals throughout Catalonia.

The hospital is part of the Southern Metropolitan Management Administration Area of the ICS, which is the agency responsible for the coordination and management of all centres, services and healthcare institutions in l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Baix Llobregat, Alt Penedès and el Garraf. The agency brings all the ICS's healthcare processes and support services in the area related to primary care (53 centres) and specialized care (HUB and Hospital de Viladecans) together under the same umbrella.

The HUB is one of the only five hospitals in Catalonia certified as a tertiary care centre, which means the hospital is equipped and staffed to treat highly complex cases and perform surgeries requiring the use of the latest technology, such as cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery and transplants. The hospital has departments devoted to all the medical and surgical specialties (except pediatrics and obstetrics).

The HUB serves 343,172 people in l'Hospitalet and Prat de Llobregat, in addition to being available to the more than 2 million people in the southern metropolitan area should their specific cases require the use of the latest technology.

Its strategic goal is to promote innovation in technology and healthcare services as well to increase the successful treatment of patients with highly complex cases through medical and surgical procedures.

The hospital has received the TOP20 award four times (in 2002, 2006, 2009 and 2010), recognizing the hospital as one of the best among the top 150 Spanish hospitals evaluated every year.

For more than 25 years, the hospital has acted as an educational centre linked to the University of Barcelona and offering classes in medicine, nursing, odontology and podiatry. It also offers more than 40 postgraduate courses in more than 40 specialties.

The hospital is a state of the art research centre and a member of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), one of the few government-owned centres granted the highest research level by the  Carlos III Research Institute (belonging to the Ministry of Science and Innovation).

The hospital is immersed in an ambitious project of expansion that will allow the centre to enlarge its current facilities to cover an area of more than 40,000 m2 (32 new operating theatres, a new IC unit with 80 beds, a new emergency room, etc.).

The HUB is also an important part of the public consortium BIOPOL of Hospitalet, whose goal is to create a common working space for hospitals, universities, research centres and companies to generate added value in the field of healthcare science.
